The plants decorating Old Town Fort Collins may be appreciated by passersby, but are hardly given a second look. Old Town has a wide array of interesting plants scattered about, but when you look closer you realize these plants are unique and fantastic in their own ways. You could even include these plants in your garden. Here are five plants that stand out when you walk around Old Town.

  1. Black-Eyed Susan

The Black-Eyed Susan plant is a perennial plant that is native to Colorado. These vibrant yellow flowers with a “black eye” in the center bloom from June to October. In the sunflower family, this plant attracts butterflies and bees.

2. Coleus

The Coleus plant grows annually in Colorado. These summer plants come in many different vibrant color combinations such as bright green and orange and dark purple and pink. These plants can grow upright or trail down a pot. These quirky plants are seen all over Old Town.

3. Alyssum

Alyssum plants sport delicate tiny flowers. Growing annually, this plant can spread out on the ground to make a pleasing ground cover. These tiny flowers also come in purple. Growing in the summer,

Palm plants are native to tropical regions and make excellent houseplants. These plants hardly belong in the mountains but hey, they may be the closest to the beach we are going to get.

5. Elephant Ear

These crazy-looking tropical plants loom large in the median on College Ave. Their appearance is so ridiculous that they could be out of a Doctor Seuss novel. It would be tricky to fit one of these into a house for winter.

Fort Collins is definitely a different place (in a good way). This quirkiness is reflected in the interesting plants that decorate Old Town
