Fort Collins, Colorado has been recognized nationally for being one of the greatest places to live, ranking number 13 out of 100 small to mid-sized cities in the US. But, what makes Fort Collins so great? While there are countless reasons to love Fort Collins, one is the availability of natural areas in the city. Whether you are a student, or a full time employee, life can be hectic. Sometimes you just need a break from your busy life, and what is a better way to escape from reality than to leave the busy city and experience nature? Luckily, if you live in Fort Collins, you don’t have to leave the city limits. Here are some natural areas just a stones throw from Old Town, Fort Collins.

5. North Shields Pond Natural Area

Distance from Old Town: 2.2 Miles

If you're looking to escape from reality for a couple hours, this might be the place for you. You can hike, fish, bike, ride horses, kayak/ canoe, or even take a nap in the grass if that’s more fitting to your workout regiment.

4. Magpie Meander Natural Area

If North Shields Pond Natural Area is too far away for your liking, don’t fret, because you can meander on over to Magpie Meander Natural Area and trade in the worries and problems flying around in your head for birds flying OVER your head.

3. McMurry Natural Area

If birds aren’t your thing, don’t worry, because McMurry Natural area has many other things to offer. McMurry Natural Area is the perfect place to sit on a bench and watch your worries disappear, that is, until you leave.

2. Salyer Natural Area

Salyer Natural Area is the place to be if you want to go for a walk on a paved path so that you don’t track mud into the office after your escape from work. It’s the best of both worlds with nature and a clean path for your Louboutin loafers.

You’re probably thinking by now that there is no way that there is a natural area closer to Old Town than Salyer Natural Area. That’s where you’re wrong. River’s Edge Natural Area is under a mile from Old Town but still has the natural feel that your cramped cubicle or dorm cant provide you. Stick your feet in the river and relax. Let the river wash away your stress and return to work, or school with a clear mind.
