Fort Collins jumps on the transient work train. Pros and cons of seven gigs you might be considering.
Before, people went to college dreaming of a career, a house and a car.
Not today.
Today, many students are dreaming to live in a van, commute by bike, and have a steady stream of gigs to get them through life.
Here are some pros and cons to jobs you can fit into your backpack.
1) Freelance photographer
The good: Working with beautiful people and places.
The bad: You spend a lot of your time replying to wanted ads offering to pay in gift cards and portfolio-building experience.
2) Fashion model
The good: There is potential to make $300 an hour and more.
The bad: You spend a lot of your time replying to ads by photographers, who are getting paid in gift cards (see above).
3) Self-employed hairdresser
The good: Gossiping.
The bad: Customers with poor hygiene — a.k.a cooties.
(Note: a state license is required.)
4) Freelance music teacher
The good: You could justify listening to Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” as work-related research.
The bad: The work day shifts to 9–9 with five-minute breaks.
5) Yoga teacher
The good: Wearing stretchy pants all day.
The bad: Good thing you can bend; because, it’s easy to go broke.
6) Psychic
The good: You know what people are thinking.
The bad: You don’t want to know what people are thinking.
(Read on about telepathic communication research — a.k.a mind reading.)
7) Uber driver
The good: You can work anytime, while living in your van.
The bad: You end up working 24-hour shifts. Sleeping fully clothed with your app on is not uncommon.
