If you classify yourself as a “foodie,” someone who values the experience of eating food, classifying it as a hobby, there are more in-depth ways to show that you’re a foodie instead of just saying it. It’s one thing to talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? C’mon people— let’s stop taking pictures of our food and get involved in and understand how it got from the farm to your Instagram-worthy plate.

  1. Support local CSAs & buy from markets that sell local food

If you want to know where your food comes from, consider getting involved with a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSAs connect community members to producer’s food, allowing them to be a part of the harvest season and get first dibs on all of their products. Also, consider picking up your food directly from the farmer. Test your tastebuds at a local farmers market.

2. Take a stroll down to City Park and try out the local food trucks

Support the community and local businesses by trying food made right in front of you, many times from local ingredients. The food trucks are parked from 5:30 to dusk every Tuesday from May to September. It may not be the fancy 5-star restaurant where you can take a seat, but it’s definitely a food experience worth a social media post or two.

3. Go to restaurants that serve local food from Fort Collins

As anyone from FoCo knows, there are SO many restaurants in Fort Collins. If you’re a true foodie here, you should know what restaurants support the local agricultural community.

4. Visit farms in the area who conduct consumer tours

If you really want to show that you love food, you should know where it comes from and how it’s made. There are local farms who are willing to conduct tours to show community members a behind-the-scenes look into their production process. Morning Fresh Dairy Farm is just one example. Every weekend you can take a tour around the facility, which is also headquartered at the same place as Noosa Yoghurt. After you get the chance to witness the Dairy-Go-Round milking process and play with baby cows, you get to sample the Dairy’s milk and Noosa Yoghurt. Talk about an instagram story-worthy experience.

5. Grow your own food start your own form of urban agriculture

Consider going that last step to really prove you’re a foodie? There are many ways to get involved in urban agriculture. Some ideas include growing your own food in a backyard or community garden or even raising chickens. This may be the most intensive step to prove your dedication to being a foodie, but it truly defines the concept of eating food from farm to fork.
