Welcome back to Beyond The Pond!

Hosted by Brian Brinkman and David Goldstein, our goal is to use the music of Phish to introduce you, the listener, to a diverse assortment of music. Through the medium of great Phish jams, we’re going to dive into music history, draw parallels with a wide range of genres, and discuss some of our favorite bands & albums. We hope you dig it!

Episode 003 focuses on the 07/29/1998 Bathtub Gin from the Riverport Ampitheatre in Maryland Heights, MO. The show’s opener, this is one of the most popular Phish jams of all time, and one of the best examples of Phish’s foray into Funk music from 1996–1998.

Midway through their Summer 1998 Tour, this show is unique not only for the 25min jam that opens it, but also for the high number of rare songs played during the show — “Dog Log” (First in 91 shows), “Fikus” (1 of 5 all time), “Vultures” (1 of 3 in ‘98), “Glide” (First in 60 shows, wouldn’t be seen for 60 more — 7/24/99). Moreover, the second set opener, “Buried Alive,” — a song that rarely exceeds the 2min mark — stretched on for 14 min before seguing into the debut of Del McCroy’s “If You Need A Fool.” The Summer 1998 tour is viewed in very high regards by Phish fans. From Trey’s full & crystalline guitar tone, to the variety of surprising, one-off covers scattered throughout the tour, to the peak of the band’s groove experimentations, there’s plenty throughout the month to intrigue any fan. This show is something of a microcosm for the tour, and one that would be worthy of it’s own official release.

Songs selected for this episode are:

The Meters “Live Wire”

Orgone “Sabi”

5ive Style “Pledge Drive”

Thundercat “Oh Sheit It’s X”

St. Vincent “Digital Witness”

In addition, we discuss two new 2017 records we highly recommend: Jairoquai Automaton and Ne-Hi Offers.
