Episode 058: Mexican Classic Rock Radio w/ Matt Dwyer

In Episode 058 we take stock of the recent Phish Mexico Run, focusing on one of our favorite jams of the run, the Carini, as well as the accompanying Tweezer -> Ghost -> Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S. segment that felt like most purely fun part of the entire weekend. To do all this, we’re joined by our good friend, and fellow podcaster, Matt Dwyer (@mdphunk) of The Helping Friendly Podcast. We dive deep into the experience of seeing Phish in Mexico, as Matt has been to both the 2016 & 2019 runs, before discussing the run as a whole.

While the first two runs in Mexico focused more on nuanced jamming, and care free setlists which reflected the locale more than any attempt to play historically important shows, here in 2019, the band approached the three-night stand in much the same way they had their 2018 Fall Tour and NYE Run. Big jams in I Always Wanted In This Way -> Death Don’t Hurt Very Long -> 2001 and Set Your Soul Free -> Mercury reflected a band eager to showcase their newest songs in prime placements where expansive jamming was of the utmost importance. On Friday night, they threw down a show that featured a fantastic setlist, loads of jamming, and a high level of nostalgia & forward-thinking creativity that was on par with the best of 3.0.

The final night, while a bit of a mess compared to first two shows, featured a fourth quarter filled with segues, jamming, and one of the wackiest encores of the last two years. Thematically, this segment of music feels like Phish channeling 70’s Classic Rock Radio, an era thats quite nostalgic for us, and, we imagine, many of our listeners.

Songs featured in this episode are:

Free: “All Right Now”

The Doobie Brothers: “China Grove”

The Firm: “Radioactive”

Thin Lizzy: “The Boys Are Back In Town”

Bad Company: “Rock & Roll Fantasy”

Golden Earring: “Radar Love”

ZZ Top: Gimme All Your Lovin’

In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Sunwatchers: “Illegal Moves,” and Bob Mould: “Sunshine Rock”
