Episode 065: Radiohead w/ Myke “Lawn Memo” Menio

In Episode 065 we deep-dive one of our favorite bands of all time: Radiohead. To do so, we’ve brought on one of our favorite podcasters, and our good friend, Myke “Lawn Memo” Menio (@lawnmemo) to help us break down their career. Myke is a longtime Phish fan who’s as active as anyone in the Phish-analysis corner of the fanbase. From The Daily Ghost to his recaps of the previous Summer Tour leading up to the next Tour Opener, to his fantastic podcast, The Daily Soundcheck, he’s one of the true forces for good in our little universe. In addition, Myke is also a huge Radiohead fan. We had a great time chatting with him about the band, and walking through their discography together. Even if you’re a total noob to Radiohead, or a longtime fan as well, there’s lots in here to convince all of their greatness.

Akin to Episode 017 (Wilco w/ Josh Carver) and Episodes 033/034 (U2 w/ Ryan Nichols) we approach Radiohead from their discography, chronologically walking through their 20+ yrs of recording, from Pablo Honey in 1993 to A Moon Shaped Pool in 2016. We break down each of their records, discuss our thoughts on where the band was pushing their sound, share a few personal stories about how they’ve impacted us as listeners, and offer up a sample of their evolving sound from each record. Our argument is simple, no other pop band in the last three decades has sustained a massive career while simultaneously shifting the norms and sounds of modern rock music than Radiohead. Love them or hate them, their constant creativity and dedication on pushing their songs beyond the fray is one of the most consistently exciting aspects of modern rock.

Where we leave the Radiohead story is following 2016’s gorgeous A Moon Shaped Pool. It’s been three years since that album’s release, meaning, if all goes according to plan, we’re right around 10 months from their next record’s surprise drop. We have zero reason to doubt their creativity going forward, and every reason to expect them to continue tweaking their sound and pushing the baseline of rock even further into the unknown.
