Episode 106: Dick’s Sand / NMINML

In Episode 106 we pay tribute to Phish’s 2010’s Tradition of closing each summer at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, highlighting two incredible runs & jams, the Sand from September 2, 2012, and No Men In No Man’s Land from September 2, 2016. The former capped off the best run we’ve ever seen at Dick’s, jamming within the grooves of Sand for 12min before diving off the deep-end into a gummy-induced spacious exploration which predicted some of the best jams of the last 3 years. The latter built into a wall of sound just two songs into its run, jamming with aggression and purpose, all the while pulling Phish out of the malaise of Summer 2016 and into a resounding peak period for the next 16 months.

An annual celebration running from 2011–2019, Dick’s served as a review of sorts on the Summer Tour & the band’s overall sound of the year, while propelling them into their next period. Most notably this happened in 2012 and 2016. In 2012 the band was coming off of a Summer Tour that saw them connect in complete shows and full jam segments which rivaled the best of their first three years of the 3.0 era. Following-up their excellent first run at Dick’s in 2011, they exploded with three monumental shows filled with jams, excellent setlisting, and a clear shift in focus for the band going forward. Nothing would be the same following the Fuck Your Face show, the Undermind, Chalk Dust Torture, Light and Sand. Comparisons to their 1.0 heights were suddenly valid, and peak periods in Fall 2013, Summer 2015, and The Baker’s Dozen were all connected to this weekend.

In 2016, the band was coming off perhaps their worst tour of the era, but a great showing at Lockn’ bled into a high-energy weekend filled with setlisting ratities and great jams in NMINML, Tweezer, Simple, Crosseyed & Painless and Piper. From here the band would play one of the strongest tours of the era in October before moving into the Baker’s Dozen dominated 2017.

When they returned in 2009 there was a lot of rebuilding needed, and through the first two years of 3.0 they spent a lot of time reviving traditions. With Dick’s in 2011 we got our first new tradition of 1.0, and through the remainder of the decade it was the singular guarantee on the touring calendar. For those who watched from afar, rarely did the weekend disappoint. For those who attended — or in Brian’s case, move to Denver because of — it was about so much more than just the music. It’s the vibe of walking in at the end of summer & walking out with fall setting in. It’s the vibe of a GA venue where you can secure enough space for your entire crew. It’s the way the sound bounces around the stadium as the cool Colorado air drifts over the crowd and the lights reach up to the rockies. There’s a lot we all hope we can get back when the pandemic recedes, for me, Dick’s is number one event I hope to have back in 2021.
