Episode 108: Eugene Crosseyed
In Episode 108 we discuss the atmospheric and oceanic take on Crosseyed & Painless from Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon on October 17, 2014, the Fall Tour Opener. Coming late in a tepid tour opener, the Crosseyed & Painless leaves the song’s main theme for A Major and a hazy jam which both matches the locale & autumnal vibe of the west coast Fall Tour. It’s one of the most underrated jams of the entire 3.0 era, and a precursor to the nuanced jamming styles of the Fall 2014 Tour.
From Eugene, the band worked their way south over two weeks ahead of their Halloween run in Las Vegas. California, in particular, benefitted from receiving seven shows within a weeks time. Anyone who has spent time in The Golden State during the month of October knows the perfection of weather in the south mixed with the ideal crispness in San Francisco makes for a dream run of Phish shows. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the band had a difficult time settling into the kind of groove they’d found a year earlier, touring the Northeast during October, and resulted in a number of shows that felt like repeated tour openers.
The highlights throughout the tour — at least until the San Francisco run — are found in moments: the Santa Barbara Ghost & Theme From The Bottom, the Forum Down With Disease, and San Francisco Night 1’s Ghost. On October 28, just five shows before the tour finale, the band finally found their stride and delivered a string of high quality shows which helped to guide them towards the larger heights of Summer 2015, just nine months later. On 10/28 a fascinating setlist gave way to expert jamming in Kill Devil Falls, Twist>Runaway Jim>Hood. The next night Light -> Possum provided the most unexpected of excellent segues. On Halloween, following their macabre and theatrical interpretation of Chilling & Thrilling Sounds Of The Haunted House, they jammed Sand w/ purpose and intent. The November 1 show featured a wild Light -> The Dogs -> Lengthwise -> Twist, while the tour finale on November 2 was highlighted — much like 10/28 — by an outstanding setlist & capped by an incredible 30min segment of music in Chalk Dust Torture -> Piper. On the whole, the tour, while suffering from tepid play on the front end, ultimately reached its peak around nuanced jamming and subtly creative interplay which would help push the band towards another career peak within the next year.
