Episode 109: Phoenix Guy Forget

In Episode 109 we discuss the hypnotic, groove-driven jam out of first Piper, and later, the debut of the joke soundcheck jam, Guy Forget. A true jam that one can never forget, this represents the last great jam of the 1.0 era, and a testament to how creative Phish was, even in their final few days as a band.

As part of the Osiris Phish podcast ‘October Project’, along with Under The Scales and Helping Friendly Podcast, we are examining Phish’s epic Fall 2000 tour. We’d encourage you to check out their episodes which were released earlier this month to get full context for Phish’s Fall 2000 Conclusion to 1.0.

Under The Scales

Helping Friendly Podcast

Episode 186: October 2000 w/ Justin Bruce

By the time they reached Phoenix on the first of October 2000, Phish had crossed the country over the previous three weeks, all under the presumption that this was the last time many fans would see them live for some undetermined amount of time. Highlights in the Darien Lakes (9/14), Hershey Park (9/15), Merriweather Post (9/17) run as well as in a number of jams: 9/11 Piper, 9/14 Suzy/Drowned, 9/15 Tube, 9/20 It’s Ice, 9/24 Cities, 9/27 Piper, among a number of others. Formally announcing their hiatus during Set II of the September 30 show in Las Vegas, the band set up their run up the Pacific Coast as a farewell to 17yrs of music, growth, improvisation, and limitless creativity.

Moving from Phoenix they played their final promo gig for Farmhouse on The Tonight Show before delivering a tepid performance in Chula Vista on 10/4. The following night in Irvine they played perhaps their best last gig of 1.0 in a show that deserves far more praise than it gets & showcases a band still filled with ideas and energy. In their final run of the era at Shoreline they balanced their approach with two vastly different shows to close out their chapter. on 10/6 they tried to play every style they’d ever played in while inviting Bob Weir on Stage for a wild encore of El Paso> Chalk Dust Torture -> West LA Fadeaway. On October 7, 2000, they played a greatest hits style show, featuring Mike’s Groove, Bathtub Gin, 2001, Tweezer, David Bowie & the encore performance of YEM all in significant slots which pointed to their importance to the band throughout the first uninterrupted period of their career.

Ultimately, the week of shows in October 2000 showcased a band ready for, & in need of, a break. Listening to these shows some twenty years later, we hear the sadness & sense of foreboding unknown that comes with initiating a break nearly two decades into a dream career. It’s an important period to revisit for it displays both the darkness and confusion that would follow them into 2.0, but also the feeling of joy they’d be chasing in their 3.0 return just under a decade later.

Songs featured in this episode are:
