Episode 110: Orlando Stash

In Episode 110 we discuss the wild and expansive take on Stash from November 14, 1995 in Orlando, Florida. A version which seamlessly moves into Manteca and Dog Faced Boy before closing with Stash, it’s a clear example of the musical heights the band had reached by November 1995, and the musical themes they were toying with as they transitioned towards their 1997–1998 peak that would come.

As part of the Osiris Phish podcast ‘November Project’, along with Under The Scales and Helping Friendly Podcast, we are examining Phish’s output in November 1995 as it led to the December 1995 peak. We’d encourage you to check out their episodes which were released earlier this month to get full context for Phish’s Fall 1995 Tour.

Episode 187: November 1995

Following their Halloween performance of The Who’s Quadrophenia, Phish took ten days off from the road before kicking off an eight week march from Atlanta to New York City which would go down as one of best — if not THE BEST — of their career. While there were moments that showcased the band’s development and growth throughout late-September & October 1995, once they begin their November/December Runs in earnest in the Southeast, there was no looking back.

The Second Leg kicked off with a high octane three night run from The Fox Theater in Atlanta before the band moved south for four shows in Florida. There we hear the Stash in question, before the Mike’s from 11/15 showcases the subtleties with which the band is capable of playing at this point in their career. Moving north we heard an outstanding 30min You Enjoy Myself in Charleston before Charlotte highlighted a massive Tweezer. Their show from November 21 in Winston-Salem featured one of the best second sets of the tour — and a deeply overlooked set in Phish history, before 11/22 in Landover showcased a 30+min Free. They played their first ever show at Hampton on 11/25 which featured a 30min Mike’s and a wild & unpredictable setlist. The month ended with an outstanding show in Dayton that previewed all the notes of December: classic songs in a roaring setlist, and a capstone jam segment, here in Tweezer -> Makisupa -> Antelope.

The band would transition to the Northeast from here and play arguably the best three weeks of their career. November, while forever overshadowed by December 1995, is still work all of your time, energy, and attention. It serves as both the foundation for the band’s peak month, while also showcasing the ongoing tinkering they were taking part in as they moved towards the Linear Musical Communication highs of 1997, still some 24 months away.

As we noted in the episode, we encourage you to check out Rob Mitchum’s Essay Series tracking every Phish show on its 25th Anniversary!
