Augusta’s Other GreenJackets
The city is far more than a golf town
Now that the coveted green jacket has been awarded at the Masters Golf Tournament, the Augusta GreenJackets baseball team has taken center stage.
Only in Augusta could this happen.
The Single-A franchise of the Atlanta Braves since 2001, the ’Jackets are members of the Carolina League.
Located on the shores of the Savannah River opposite downtown in North Augusta, South Carolina, SRP Park hosts the team’s home games.
Augusta has been a great baseball town for as long as it has been a golf town. Future Hall-of-Famer, Ty Cobb began his professional career in Augusta in 1904.
Golf legend, Bobby Jones, was just two years old.
Back then, the team was aptly named the “Tourists” as Augusta was the Winter Capital of North America. And a big part of why Bobby Jones would later build his dream golf course here.
Who knew?
In the summer of 1930, as Jones chased the Grand Slam of Golf, Augusta made baseball history when it staged the first night game south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
