It Turns Out You Don’t Need to Understand a Sport to Enjoy It
Serbia vs. Spain Handball
Sometimes, the best experiences come from saying “yes”— even when you have no idea what you’re saying yes to.
Back in 2018, I was walking around Wroclaw, Poland. I saw a giant ball in the city center. It was obviously a sports ball, but I had no idea what sport. The accompanying advertisement was written in Polish so that didn’t offer any clues either.
A couple of days later I asked one of my Polish friends what the giant ball advertisement was all about.
“The European Championship of Handball is here this month,” the friend answered.
What the heck is handball?
“It’s like soccer Myour hands, but more violent.”
Interesting, I thought, before immediately moving on and not giving handball another thought for years.
Present Day
Fast forward to March 2025 and handball finally came back into my life.
My wife walked into the house one day and randomly brought it up.
“Do you want to watch Serbia play Spain in handball tomorrow?”
I can only imagine the confused look on my face as I tried to process those words. Thankfully…
