What The Hell Is A Slippery Rock?
The strange story of a small Pennsylvania college football team whose name is nationally known
It all started with me when I took my football-playing son to see different colleges his senior year in high school. Living in Pennsylvania, we saw many of the fine colleges and universities that bless the state.
One of the prerequisites in his choice was the institution’s football team. We both felt quite sure he could compete on the college level.
Lehigh, Dickenson, Gettysburg, West Chester, Ursinus, and a few others were on our agenda. We made a visit to a highly regarded Division II school in the Pittsburgh area with the incongruous name of Slippery Rock University.
Athletic facilities in all the institutions we visited were always first-class. The emphasis on physical activity was a big selling point to the students and their families we found out.
To my son, the football field was of primary interest
Almost every field we saw was state-of-the-art artificial or finely manicured turf.
All were surrounded by rather modest bleachers built to hold from 4 to 10,000 spectators.
