The kids are alright and knew how to hand it to the adults.

My father owned a summer camp for boys at the Jersey Shore. Most of the parents of the campers who attended came from New York City. The parents wanted my father to make good on the camp’s motto, “You Give Us The Boy, We’ll Give You The Man.”

The day camp was based on teaching the kids the rudiments of playing the games of baseball, football and basketball.

Most of the kids became adequate, at least, by the end of the summer.

There was one sport, however, every single camper could say he was part of an undefeated team. Not once in the 10 some years that the camp was in business did the campers lose.

Parent’s Day

The last day of camp most of the kids’ parents came to the camp field to see their child receive an award. All the boys got one for just attending the camp. My dad made everyone feel unique when he personally handed out the medals in an excruciatingly long final day ceremony.

The parents loved seeing their boys receive small medals for sportsmanship, character and behavior.

At the end of the award ceremony there was the Parent’s Day big draw. All in attendance, including the parents and…
