Vamos Argentina…

So many fond memories and it all started with a poster of Maradona

I think it was the poster of Diego Maradona on the walls at my home that drew me to football.

Not only football, but Argentina.

In Italia ‘90, I rooted for the resurgent Albeceleste after their shocker at the hands of Cameroon. That record stayed till their defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia in Qatar.

I remember the despair on the face of Maradona after Andres Bremes’ penalty goal at the 85th minute for West Germany.

In USA ‘94, Argentina started with a bang, defeating the Greeks four goals to nil. Defeating Nigeria was also okay. But the bombshell of Maradona being banned for drugs was too much for fans like me. Argentina quietly moved out of the cup after their loss to Romania.

Argentina showed good promise in ‘98. The Round of 16 match with England was classic. But the madness of Ortega and Dennis Bergkamp’s stunner dislodged them out of the World Cup in the quarterfinals. The 2002 World Cup was the worst World Cup Argentina had. They played like trash and got knocked out in the first round itself.

To be continued…
