Although it is just a one-page document, creating a great Resume is the hardest part of preparing for a great career. It seems really harsh to compile everything you have done into a single document! It is rightly said:

First impression is the last impression.
Your Resume is your first impression, make it count!

You’ll see that many students struggle to create their resumes and simply copy-paste from one of the numerous free resume templates available online. But the hardest aspect of creating a Resume is not its format, it is figuring out what to put on a resume and what to leave off.

Impressive skills make an impressive resume

Here is the hard truth — Your ability to find employment will depend A LOT on your expertise. Putting unnecessary information on your resume in hopes of grabbing the recruiter’s attention rarely works.

For instance, if you are applying for front-end development roles, mention projects you have done in web development. Example: Build your portfolio website. Focusing on experiences that are absolutely unrelated to that job role will only confuses the recruiter. They may eventually decide that you are not the right fit. You must have heard the saying:

“Jack of all trades, master of none”

Interviewers have pre-established criteria for every job role. The hiring process is designed to assess if you are a superb fit or not. So you need to design your Resume to convince the recruiter that YOU are what they are looking for!

The best way to do that is to actually spend time on improving your skills in ONE domain — build projects, and consistently work towards making yourself an expert in that domain.

Things to avoid while creating your Resume

Lying on your resume is a BAD IDEA. It can have serious and long-lasting consequences. Layoffs are happening more frequently than ever, so if you exaggerate details about your experience or education during an interview, you could find yourself out of a job in no time. Do yourself a favour and be honest.

Don’t make spelling and grammar mistakes. Even minor errors can leave a bad impression. Before submitting your resume, double check to make sure that all spelling, grammar, and punctuation is correct.

Become an expert, everyone will want you!

Keep in mind that your resume listed your skills, but you still need to demonstrate them. Decide your desired career and work consistently towards making yourself an expert. Keep in mind that having experience boosts your chances of being chosen significantly.
