After months of ‘out of office’ replies, everyone is back at work, the inboxes are piling up and to do lists are getting cleared (and filling themselves up again). For ‘time poor’ young professionals, volunteering can easily fall far down the list of priorities. Sound familiar?
Some even worry that we’re a generation turning ourselves into ‘work martyrs’, sacrificing our personal time and holiday days to get ahead. The problem isn’t limited to the corporate world either. Non-profits are feeling the squeeze too.
September blues? For all our sakes, it’s time to think again about making your time work for you
In ‘Pressed for Time’, LSE professor Judy Wacjman, has argued our workplace “social behaviour is not determined by technology. Rather, human beings “do” daily activities such as family, work, leisure and friendships with culturally different uses of digital technologies, some positive and some negative.”
So we’re busy not because of our inbox (or smartphone) but because we are actively engaged in relationships across our social networks, communities and leisure activities.
As Deloitte found in its 2016 Millennial Survey, 73% suggested their business has a positive impact upon wider society and millennials generally remain upbeat about businesses’ potential to do good.
Because we judge the performance of a business on what it does and how it treats people, the working world is now more engaged in good causes than ever.
Just look at BeyondMe’s website to see how often and how many young professionals have committed their time, skills and money to the benefit of good causes.
