The National Cancer Institute estimates that roughly one-third of all cancer deaths may be diet related. What you eat can hurt you, but it can also help you. An anti-cancer diet is an important strategy you can use to reduce your risk of cancer. More than any supplement or vitamin, getting certain nutrients through eating whole foods can help block tumors.

The following foods have the ability to help stave off cancer and some can even help inhibit cancer cell growth or reduce tumor size –

  1. Garlic

Garlic has immune-enhancing allium compounds that increase the activity of immune cells which fights cancer and indirectly help break down cancer-causing substances. People who eat more garlic are less likely to develop various kinds of cancer, especially in digestive organs such as the esophagus, stomach, and colon.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is easy to find in grocery stores, and you can use it in a variety of recipes. Turmeric can enhance the flavor of most any meal and come with a long list of healthful benefits. It contains curcumin, which can reduce the risk of cancer.

2. Green Tea

Green Tea contains antioxidants called catechins, keeping free radicals from destroying cells. Catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth. Both black and green tea contains catechins, but green tea provides more antioxidants than black.

3. Tomato

Tomatoes help guard the DNA in our cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called ‘lycopene’. An increased intake of lycopene has been linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer.

4. Cruciferous Vegetables

The group containing broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower have a chemical component called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective variety. Broccoli, especially sprouts, also have the phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin — believed to aid in preventing some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer.

Make room in your diet for the following foods and drinks to fight cancer.
