The perfectionist Steve Jobs was a fruitarian i.e he consumed only fruits. Actor Ashton Kutcher also followed this diet in preparation for his role playing Apple Inc. CEO and onetime fruitarian Steve Jobs, in the film ‘Jobs’. Kutcher’s pancreas levels went “all out of whack” after following a fruitarian diet. Steve jobs died of pancreatic cancer.

A fruitarian is someone who primarily eats raw fruits. ‘Fruitarian diet’ by definition is 75+% raw fruit by weight, and the remaining foods vegan and raw. You must transition into a fruitarian diet slowly and be sure to include a variety of fruits. Along with the fruits, include nuts, seeds and vegetables with every meal as they provide the fat and protein that our body needs.

“Although man has included meat in his diet for thousands of years, his anatomy and physiology, and the chemistry of his digestive juices, are still unmistakably those of a frugivorous animal” ― Herbert M. Shelton (An American naturopath, alternative medicine advocate and author)

Positive aspects of being a fruitarian

It has a lot of short term benefits, like detoxifying the body. Also it will help to reduce your weight. But abandon the diet, and the weight will creep back up. Proponents of fruitarian diet claims that it promotes mental clarity, concentration, energy and self-confidence, along with weight loss, a stronger immune system and cancer prevention.

Risks of being a fruitarian –

Weight gain — Fruits are heavy in natural sugars. While people on this diet could lose weight, eating large portions of fruit actually puts you at risk of gaining weight.

Tooth decay — The high sugar content in fruits can pose a serious risk at tooth decay. Apples have the potential to be as corrosive as candy or soda. Some fruits, such as oranges, are highly acidic and can erode tooth enamel.

Lack of variety of nutrients — Fruitarians generally lack in vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D, iodine and omega-3 fatty acids, which can lead to anemia, tiredness, lethargy and immune system dysfunction. Low calcium can also cause osteoporosis.

A fruit-only diet can also be dangerous for people with pancreatic and kidney disorders.

Before you try out the ‘fruitarian diet’, it’s important to get clearance from your doctor as they will prescribe the dietary supplements you’ll need to take to overcome the vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

“The human body system, from hands to teeth to digestive juices, was designed to cope superbly with fruit…nothing fulfills our vitamin, mineral and toxin-cleansing water needs more than fruit.” — Ranulph Fiennes (Writer, English explorer and holder of several endurance records)
