A home garden is a place where you can balance practicality and indulgence. We all wish to go organic, but the price is always a factor. That’s where home gardening comes in. It is a great hobby and is easy on the pocket as compared to buying organic. Try growing a few of these nutrient-dense foods in your own garden.

  1. Peas

Pea’s crop thrives in cool, moist weather and can be planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. They require about 2 months before they are ready for harvestation. Peas also contribute to the health of the soil by fixing nitrogen.

2. Beans

Beans are real nutritional powerhouses. They are high in iron, fiber, manganese and phosphorous. Harvest dry beans when the pods have completely dried on the vine. The pods should be light brown, and you should be able to feel the hard beans inside.

3. Tomatoes

Fresh and bright red tomatoes is a really attractive sight in your garden. They are rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, niacin, potassium, and vitamins A, B6 and C. They’re also a great source of the antioxidant lycopene. Tomato hornworm can be a problem in many areas — these large caterpillars should be removed by hand whenever you see them.

4. Beets

They are a great addition to salads and can even be juiced. Beetroots are very high in iron, potassium and vitamin C. Beetroots are at their best when they are harvested small — between one and two inches across.

The home gardener is part scientist, part artist, part philosopher and part ploughman. — John. R. Whiting

Home gardening will not only increase your healthy food consumption, it will also increase your time spent outdoors. More importantly, you will develop a new hobby learn something new every day.
