Reading the Bible: Genesis, Chapter 2

The only righteous man in the entire humankind

first things first, the movie Noah from 2014 has a lot more action than it is true to the source. it has some links to the source, but it certainly not what happened (although i liked the movie as well). here is what I have learned from the reading.

Restarting creation of humanity

From all generations between Adam and Noah, it is said that God liked only Noah, and planned to restart the creation. remember that this list contains only ONE dynasty, and all of these fathers had more children.

from Adam to Noah to Abraham

It’s amazing to realize that Keinan (4th from Adam) was actually still alive when Noah was born. but we should consider that these generations did not really meet each other since families were usually spreading away to new locations rather than staying in the same place (once they have enough strength to travel and people in the tribe).

That drawing also shows that Noah did not start having his kids at the same time as others. maybe because he was very focused on building the Ark, but the reason is not given.

Who was inside the ark & existence of dinosaurs

The ark had Noah’s wife, their boys, and their wives (all the boys already had wives). if you ask yourself why they did not include also the families of the wives, it is probably because they were not in relation anymore, since back then wives were taken to live with the man tribe (the wife follows the man, remember?).

Then came all the animals to enter the ark. With 2–7 couples from each species.

I heard rumors that the existence of dinosaurs is explained since the flood would have eliminated them (since they could not fit into the ark). But it is weird now since it says that ALL species entered the ark.

from entering the Ark until leaving it, the bible counts ~380 days

Coming out of the ark

The flood lasted 150 days wiping out all living creates on the land. Then it took about 2 months for the crow and the dove to find land with vegetation.

The route of the ark from start to finish (from XXX to mountain Ararat).

Drunk Noah curses Knaan

When they settled down on the new location, Noah started growing vineyards and learned to make wine. He became a drunk man.

one day his boy Ham saw him naked, while Noah was crushed from wine on the ground. This was unforgivable, and Noah cursed Ham’s eldest son, Knaan, to be forever the slave of all the rest of humanity. Actually, he said “slave of slaves”, which is a quite harsh curse for a person which technically did nothing wrong (his father did)… The only explanation I can think of is the fact that Knaan was born inside the Ark (Genesis 9:18), so perhaps he marks the “old” world.

Knaan is the father of most of the nations who are the Hebrews biggest enemies.

from Noah until Abraham

Noah’s oldest son Shem, has the dynasty leading to Ever and Avraham.

Shem means “name” in Hebrew. Ever is origin for Ivrim (or Hebrews, the Hebrew people). Ivrit is the name of Hebrew language.

Life span of men shrinks after the flood

Last interesting fact about the flood is that the maximum age of humans shrinks from 1000 years (between Adam to Noah), to 100 in the era of Avraham. This was done with evolution and one can see the change between Noah and the next generations after him.

The bible says that God wanted to destroy what he created and rebuild it. Remake all the living creatures. So this might also explain that also the age was changed. Perhaps it was an error in the DNA… Perhaps the previous version of humans was more different than we know. So basically it’s not Adam who is our father, it’s Noah.

The rainbow as an eternal reminder of the flood

God tells the survivors that they will now spawn many children and generations, but gives one rule: you can eat any animal or vegetation on the land but do not kill each other (and do not eat raw meat).

God puts the rainbow in the sky in order to remember the flood and the danger in it. both to the people and to God himself, since he promises never to bring a similar flood again.

Birth of languages and tower of Babylon

In the next generations to come people still spoke the same language. they built the tower of Bavel (Babylon). what happens in this story is still unclear to me. it seems like the people wanted to have a place around it they could still sit.

but the story ends with God not allowing the tower to be built and with forcing the people to spread out across the lands. this is the creation of multi nations and multi-languages.

dynasty of nations sprang from Noah. almost every name here correlates to a nation we know today

Lastly, we have a description of the dynasty until Avram (later changed to Avraham).
