Take a step towards complete honesty with your Heavenly Father. Ask Him to pour His love out on you as you pour your heart out to Him.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Luke 9:61, ” Yet another said, ‘I will follow You, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ “

Background

The last time I checked, we were all human beings. Walking upright and self-aware, we are infinitely more advanced than the rest of the animal kingdom. And though we are made in God’s image, we are not quite heavenly beings with supernatural powers. So being in the position that we are in, we are blessed with the ability to consider what is beyond us and what is beneath us, as well as ourselves. There are scientists and experts who research and analyze the beasts and bugs of the world, trying to figure out how and why they do the things they do. And we have psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical experts studying man and performing experiments, trying to figure out how we work and why we do the things we do. But what amazes me is how many experts there are in the area of understanding who God is and how He works. In fact, they think they understand Him so well that they can beat Him at His own game. And they spend more time maneuvering around the facts than they do dealing with their own reality.

Application

Like this man quoted in our verse today. He knew Jesus wanted followers. Our Savior had plainly said, ” Follow Me. ” He had just as plainly told them what not to follow, where not to place their affections. So this man tells Jesus he’ll be there, but first he needs to go back home and tell everyone goodbye. Doesn’t that sound like so many of us at the car dealership or appliance store? We’ve heard the sales pitch, but we’re not really interested, so we tell the salesman we’ll go home and think about, and come back tomorrow. But we don’t return, do we? And neither did the almost-follower of Jesus. He knew God so well that he thought a few words of commitment would suffice. And we do too. But we won’t take the time to know ourselves well enough, or actually, be honest with ourselves, to admit that we are disingenuous, lazy, half-hearted, and easily distracted. Dare I say it, but we are liars. That man was not coming back to follow Jesus. And let’s be honest about ourselves. Where are you trying to fool God? When will you stop being a God-chiatrist or a God-chologist and give him the heart that He died for? When will we let God be the expert and follow Him as His little children?

Charge

As we seek Him today, take a step towards complete honesty with your Heavenly Father. Ask Him to pour His love out on you as you pour your heart out to Him.
