Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Mark 8:17–18, ” Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? “

Background

There are amazing stories of people who have suffered through a coma for an extended period of time, only to wake from it a completely different person. One man was in a coma for several years, and when he awoke, he no longer could speak English, but could now speak fluent Mandarin. He knew a little Chinese before his accident, but by the time he regained consciousness, the English was gone and he had somehow mastered his new tongue. Another man was in a coma-like state for 12 years, yet was completely conscious but unable to move or communicate his condition. For years he heard and understood everything that was going on around him, yet no one knew he was completely aware of all that was being said and done.

Eventually, he completely regained his capacity to respond and express, and later went on to write a book about his ordeal entitled ” Ghost Boy, ” describing what it was like being locked inside his own body with no way to reach the outside world. Other individuals who have survived lengthy comas have shared how they too have awoken with memories of the time lost, or with knowledge or abilities that they did not have when they suffered their coma.

Application

Oddly, some of these who have entered a vegetative state for multiple years have awakened with more insight and understanding than it appears the disciples of Jesus had while spending almost every waking moment with Him. After miraculously feeding several thousand on two occasions, Jesus addresses His devoted men who are now panicking because they brought only one loaf of bread with them on their boat ride. Jesus pleas to almost every way that the disciples could grasp His lessons, exasperated that He did this great work through their very hands, yet they learned less from it than if they had been in a coma the entire time. It’s bad when being comatose is a step up for you in relation to Christ. He is no doubt showing you things in a multitude of ways. Try and notice at least one of them that warrants your attention.

Charge

As we seek Him today, hear or see or understand or remember something that Jesus has intended for you.
