Expect Everything From Our Savior

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from John 4:25, ” The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ (who is called Christ). ‘When He comes, He will tell us all things.’ “

Background

Expectations. We’ve all got them. You begin your day with an expectation of how things are supposed to be. From the turning on of the water in the shower, to the traffic that accompanies you to work, be it the chaos and activity that interrupts your sleep, or the deafening silence that greets you yet again. The moment you saw this email in your inbox, you had an expectation, as did the many others who chose not to open it. Your heart will not beat a beat without your mind being full of expectations. Now, so many have been quoted over the years, touting the value and wisdom of lowering one’s expectations, or having none at all. That path, they claim, leads to a life without any disappointments. And no disappointments means contentment. I would contend, however, that their life of no expectations is in actuality filled with thousands of tiny ones all along the way. Conversely, many have espoused the idea that raising one’s expectations, in themselves and others, will serve to improve the results and increase the level of satisfaction, leading to a more full and complete life. I think for the common bloke like you and me, it might have as much to do with our mood at the moment than anything else.

Application

Thomas Edison once said, ” If we did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves. ” And as true as I think that sentiment is, I believe it applies even more so to the follower of Christ. The woman at the well, she trudged along from day to day, but she expected someone to eventually come who would tell all things. That was her expectation of a Messiah, a Deliverer. She may not have known to expect anything more. But there is no such excuse for you and me. We have within us full access to the power of the Godhead, the capacity to be one in mind with Christ, and full fellowship with the One who created our very soul and body. Scripture says that the world could not contain the books that would record all that Jesus Himself did on earth, so how much more should be done and written regarding His body now, were we to do all that He is still capable of?

Charge

As we seek Him today, expect that God can and wants to act like He can. Cast aside your lowly expectations of a Savior who actually has big plans.
