Confess any fear or reticence that you have to share the good news of Jesus. Ask God to grow a desire in you to experience and live out His power.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 2 Timothy 1:7, ” For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. “

Background

There are still a few remaining who were around when the American military dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, effectively ending World War II. Racing to beat the Germans, who were also working on a similar project to create a weapon of mass destruction, the U.S. created and tested its first bomb in July, 1945. Viewing the initial testing as a success, the government then moved forward to drop successive bombs on Hiroshima and then Nagasaki, three days afterwards. Only six days later, Japan surrendered, and the war was over. And so, where did all this power and might come from that led to the sudden ending of a war that had dragged on for four years? What was it that got everyone’s attention? It was the tiny atom. Once believed to be the smallest form of nature, this microscopic particle, of which millions could fit on the head of a pin, holds within it the source of amazing power. For when the atom is split, it releases energy that is capable of almost immeasurable potential. And though this science was used for destruction that led to a perceived good back in 1945, when used in other ways, the power of the atom can provide energy and serve mankind like perhaps no other source can.

Application

To think that we serve a God who is awesome and powerful enough to have created every atom that has ever existed, and reigns over the combined power of them all, should blow our minds. And to think that we still go forth into this lost world with a spirit of fear or embarrassment to declare His gospel should equally blow our minds. If we could simply unlock the power of God, as described in today’s verse, we would discover the power that creates the power that the scientists discovered decades ago. And having done that, we would become the single most effectual agent for change that this world has ever seen. Landscapes would not be decimated, but hearts would be resurrected for eternal glory. The power is there, it simply needs to be realized and released.

Charge

As we seek Him today, confess any fear or reticence that you have to share the good news of Jesus. Ask God to grow a desire in you to experience and live out His power.
