The Holy Spirit as Comforter

Our verse for today comes from John 14:16, “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.”

Background

There’s nothing like a crisis to make you appreciate what you have. Medical scares, fire alarms, a misplaced wallet, threatening weather, or a lost child in a department store, the list is too lengthy and unpleasant to spend much time considering. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes these types of trials to reawaken us to the goodness and blessings that are ours each moment of every day. And as blessings go, none could be more significant than the ever-present Person of the Holy Spirit. But what manner of consideration have you given Him lately? In Christ’s words to His disciples, He revealed amazing truths to us all concerning the Spirit even as the crisis of His departure loomed. First, Jesus said He would ask the Father to send Him. And this asking was not that of a subordinate to his superior. This word expresses the same as kings requesting of one another, as equals do when they ask of each other. Jesus was God, and He was going to ask of God to send the Spirit to and for us. He also affirmed that the request was already answered, for He said that God would do it. There was no uncertainty, not then and not now. Further, the Helper that was coming was of the same nature as God and Jesus, fully divine and part of the Godhead. He wasn’t another in quantity, but another in similitude to the One who created them.

Application

And He was a person, fully alive and distinct. It wasn’t a power or a force or some sort of spirit, but a “He” who does and intends and communicates and fellowships. And finally, the Holy Spirit was eternal, with God and Jesus from eternity past, and with them and us through eternity future. We have an eternal destiny with an eternal promise, and we abide with an eternal Spirit. Helpers and comforters don’t generally garner the spotlight, but rather make themselves available whenever the need arises. May I say the need is now for the Holy Spirit to do His work in us. A crisis can strike at any moment.

Charge

As we seek Him today, worship God in spirit and in truth, keeping His Word as the Spirit leads you for His good glory.
