All Sons & Daughters performing “Great Are You Lord” live.

This amazing worship song was written by David Leonard and Leslie Jordan, who make up the duo All Sons & Daughters, and singer/songwriter James Ingram. The song was birthed from a line that Jason Ingram had written, “It’s Your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise”. Leonard, Ingram and Jordan then dug into scriptures around that concept and penned the rest of the song.

Whenever they introduced the song they would reference a phrase that they heard Louie Giglio speak while attending Passion 2013, “Worship is when we give God His breath back”. Although the song was written in 2012 and the group is no longer together, the song is still being sung at worship services all over the world.

Biblical Basis:

Genesis 2:7 — And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Psalm 145:3 — Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

VERSE
You give life, You are love, You bring light to the darkness
You give hope You restore ev’ry heart that is broken
Great are You Lord

Analysis: This verse speaks to the fact that God is the giver of life and the epitome of love. God is also the light in the darkness and our great hope.

CHORUS
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

Analysis: What greater way to express the fact that it is God who gives us everything, even the breath that we have in our lungs, we can definitely do our part in using what He blessed us with for His glory.

BRIDGE
And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry these bones will sing
Great are You Lord

Analysis: I believe that the bridge is self explanatory, after thinking of just how great God is and the fact that He loves us so much that He created us, the most fitting thing for us to do is shout His praise and worship Him. The songwriters also used a play on the valley of the dry bones scripture found in Ezekiel 37.

Evaluation: This is a beautiful song and because there are not that many words, it is very easy to use in a corporate worship setting.
