Living Hope

Author/Composer Information: Phil Wickham and Brian Johnson co-wrote this song. Wickham began his journey as a worship leader for his youth group at the age of 13 in Vista, California.

He officially began his music career in 2003 and since then has released nine albums and went on several tours with other well-known artists. One of Wickham’s songs, “This is Amazing Grace,” also became RIAA certified Platinum and was ranked highest in the 2014 year-end Christian Airplay chart.

Biblical Basis: Acts 4:12, John 19:28–30, 1 Peter 1:3.

Textual Analysis: The first verse speaks of our total depravity in being separated from God but also of how Jesus is able to reach us in the darkest night. The second verse describes Jesus and how he bought us back from sin and made us co-heirs with him. The chorus is a proclamation of freedom from sin and salvation in Jesus. The third verse is about the resurrection of Jesus from the grave and his victory over death.

Musical Evaluation: It is a slower 4/4 song that only requires use of the one (tonic), four (subdominant), five (dominant), and minor six (submediant) chords. The melody is very singable and there are no complex rhythms to grasp before being able to use this piece.

Critical Evaluation: This song would definitely be appropriate and effective in corporate worship. Not only does it tell the good news of Jesus Christ to unbelievers, it is also a reminder to saved people of what Jesus has already done for us and the victory we share with him over sin and death.
