The spit signal

I turned a corner today to come upon a guy crossing the street in the middle of the block, the nyc j-walk. As I approached him I had the choice to either cut right and go in front of him, or jerk left and go behind him. Usually I cut right, so that they can see me, but he saw me already and kept crossing forward. Rather than stopping in the middle of the road, he game me a spit signal, essentially launching a loogie to mark his frontward space. Classy move. I’ll go behind you, thank you very much.
