Apple’s Acquisition of NextVR Says a Lot About How We’ll Consume Content From Now On
The future of watching films and sports is through virtual reality
NextVR changed it’s website's landing page to “Heading in a New Direction” last week. Their Android app was quickly removed from the Google Play Store as well.
The technology startup has been a pioneer in broadcasting sports and entertainment events through virtual reality and only recently got acquired by Apple in a deal reportedly worth $100 million.
NextVR has been around for a while now and the platform is known to provide immersive experiences for live and on-demand events in a virtual space. It’s really handy to use with Oculus Rift like headsets as the app lets us stream events easily. Their portfolio boasts of more than 40 patents and some high-profile partnerships with organizations like National Basketball Association, World Wrestling Entertainment, Fox Sports, Wimbledon, and more.
This deal might come off as a surprise to some since Facebook and Microsoft have had only limited success in the VR space while Magic Leap and other smaller AR/VR startups are finding it hard to survive.
