This release includes changes to existing features based on developer feedback. Many thanks to the Shoptimizer for BigCommerce crew for their feedback and hard work on this.

Below, we’ll highlight a few of the biggest updates, but you can find detailed release notes in the CHANGELOG.md file at WordPress.org.

Enhancements

Onboarding Screen

A number of changes have been made to the onboarding screen.

  • Previously when submitting the form to create a new account there was no indication that work was being done, leading to confusion. We’ve now added a spinner to show that something is happening.
  • We’ve always sent an email upon account creation which required action from the site creator, but it wasn’t visually explained in the UI very well. We’ve inverted the colors on the messaging to make it more visible.
  • When setting up a single WordPress store, a set of API keys is automatically created for you. When setting up a multi-site instance, the plugin isn’t capable of settings up multiple keys, because your WordPress sites aren’t all created at once. Because of this, you’ll need to manually make API keys for all subsequent stores in that multi-site instance. Previously the documentation for this was only lived on our Support site. Now we’ve added documentation right in the workflow, so you can’t miss it.

First Channel Changes

Until now the person configuring the store for the very first time has been asked to create a channel. Now that task is automated, and new products are automatically added to that channel. This removes a technical and potentially confusing step, making the process easier and faster.

Item Count Badge

Previously the item count badge was only rendered if the mini-cart was NOT enabled. Now it’s rendered regardless. This makes it so that customers can see the number of items in their cart without having to mouse over the menu item to make the mini-cart appear.

WordPress 5.3 Updates

WordPress 5.3 made some accessibility changes in the UI and we’ve updated the UI in our plugin to match.

Conclusion

That’s all for now! Follow CHANGELOG.md for our complete list of updates and we’ll see you here in a few weeks for the latest batch of new features!
