Up to the Teacher’s Desk

Once in second grade, my teacher made a big deal about me coming up to her desk.
If we ever had any trouble spelling a word, we could walk up and ask. She’d write it out for us in our notebooks.
It was well into the school year and I had yet to make that trip.
Whatever pride I felt in the fuss she made was short-lived after I learned how to spell that deceptive word that finally broke my streak…
