Every holiday comes with its unique traditions and celebrations, and Memorial Day is no different. The purpose of the holiday, of course, is to honor those who have fallen while serving in the United States Armed Forces. And a plethora of traditions have popped up over the years, including food, activities, and travel. In a multiple choice survey, 64% said they eat hot dogs, 50% said they eat hamburgers, 21% said they choose vegan options, 27% said they grill corn, 32% said they eat potato salad, 17% said they eat ribs, 21% said they eat pasta salad, 15% said they eat baked beans, and 11% said they eat coleslaw.

50% said they eat cupcakes, 30% said they eat cobbler, 33% said they eat pie, 33% said they eat a strawberry dessert, 17% said they eat popsicles, 9% said they eat lime/lemon bars, 18% said they eat cheesecake, 16% said they eat cheesecake, 16% said they eat fruit cups, 6% said they eat truffles.

In sum, our community likes to celebrate the holiday by eating, spending quality time with family, and getting outdoors. The beach and the lake are popular destinations for the weekend, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s also a popular weekend for conventions, festivals, and sporting events. Unfortunately, a good amount of people have to work during the holiday weekend, or may not have Monday off like most people. So long as everyone gets a chance to see family and eat some good food, though, it’s a great time of year.
