Things went so fast, I never got around to writing about our new book What it Means to Be Human and Global Bildung Day, which had the same theme, before the book was published and Global Bildung Day was over. We launched the book on March 21st during Global Bildung Day — and now we’re in April!

But despair not! We will keep What it means to be human as a theme for the rest of 2024 (and probably beyond).

There is something about this very fundamental question that resonates with a lot of people right now: We are facing artificial intelligence that can outsmart us in various ways — then what does it mean to be human? We are facing climate change and fundamental changes of our life conditions on Earth, and we have created the mess ourselves — then what does it mean to be human? For that reason, and a bunch of other reasons, we are facing mass-migration and upheaval in traditional cultures around the globe — then what does it mean to be human?

We need to have this global conversation, and if you would like to join it, there are several things you can do:

1. If you are human: Mark September 21st in your calendar, because that is when we will have Global Bildung Day next time: https://www.globalbildung.net/gbd2024-september-21/

2. If you are interested in bildung and in working with bildung, join our Global Bildung Network here: https://network.globalbildung.net

3. Check out the book What it Means to Be Human here: https://www.nordicbildung.org/what-it-means-to-be-human/

4. Check out the previous Global Bildung Day: https://www.globalbildung.net/gbd2024-march-21/

And if you are in Europe, you can also join us live in Rotterdam on May 7–8 for European Bildung Day: https://www.globalbildung.net/ebd2024/

More to come…
