How to draw for conversion

“Make yourself comfortable” — inspired by Searching for comfort in an uncomfortable chair, 1944 — Bruno Munari.

In Billie we use illustrations as a language to communicate with people, representing the real situation and conveying tangible emotions.

Illustrations should always have a goal and create empathy with our target.

Every illustration should be meaningful in all its elements, people should get the feeling that we take them seriously enough to challenge them with details ;).

Our visual language has a Vector-realistic style, minimal and essential representations of real objects and daily life scenes. This is in order to give a realistic context to our audience, encouraging to trust our service in their real life.

Artworks are done with as little details as possible, almost only outlines, maintaining a feeling of clarity and simplicity.

The role of illustrations

Illustrations are an essential element of our brand.

The goal and the emotion are always defined considering the specific target we plan to address.

Billie’s storytelling principles

MAKE ME TRUST:

The feeling of affinity and social identity generates trust and encourages users to address Billie, that’s why I design compositions/scenes in which people can project themselves into, providing them the feeling of a specific comfortable or uncomfortable situation that they had.

Users should feel annoyed about their need (waiting for their money, is not able to pay their bills), but at the same time relieved for the “peace of mind” solution that Billie is offering them.

MAKE IT REAL:

A financial digital-tech service could be perceived as an intangible product from the target, even if considering a large spectrum of financial/tech background skills that people could have.

Representing realistic people in their office, using tech-devices as laptops and smartphones aim to make the product feeling more tangible.

MAKE IT CLEAR:

Artworks are done with as little details as possible, almost only outlines, maintaining a feeling of clarity and simplicity.

Illustrations principles

Bold

Our Illustration&Brand style aims to be evergreen, a brand that will survive through time. Boldness using superior typography, unexpected colors and confident layout.

Our illustrations are perceived bold because of the generous white spacing around them, that helps the cognition and the focus.

Realistic

Representing realistic people in their office, using tech-devices as laptops and smartphone aims to make the product feeling more tangible.

Essential

Remember that Less is More!

“Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”. — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

When it’s time to move a draft to the final design, it’s always necessary to do a self-review and cut elements that could generate noise and doesn’t add crucial values to the illustration.

Takeaway

  • Every element should have a meaning and a goal, don’t place “something just to fill empty space”. White space around helps eyes to focus on core elements.
  • When you think you are done, cut minimum 2 elements that are not crucial, Less is More!
  • designer? practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. Start again!
