Motivation
- Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, considers India as an innovation hub to build better products for other developing countries. Uber has launched unique and catered products in India such as Uber Lite app, Moto and UberAuto.
- According to the 2011 census, rural India is home to 70% of the nation’s population — over 800M people. That’s a huge market for Uber to tap into.
Problem
The biggest problem in rural India is unemployment (specifically seasonal unemployment).
Most rural Indians work in the agricultural sector. Due to the nature of their occupation, farmers and agricultural labourers are largely employed during the sowing/harvesting season and are unemployed for the rest of the year (4–6 months). This type of unemployment is referred to as seasonal unemployment. It’s difficult for them to find a temporary job or source of income during that period of the year.
Public transportation is also not very developed in rural areas. Service providers such as teachers, doctors, barbers, etc. have to walk long distances to get to their workplaces. It’s exhausting…
