The largest recorded DDoS attack, to date.

The largest host of source code in the world, Github, who has a user base in the vicinity of 20 million users, experienced a DDoS attack on February 28th.

From Github:

“The attack originated from over a thousand different autonomous systems [ASNs] across tens of thousands of unique endpoints. During the 8min attack, at no point was any of its customers’ data at risk.”

Github Engineering shared a detailed incident report with next steps for prevention and continuity. You may visit the Incident Report via the link below.

Takeaway:

The site was down for 5 minutes and then intermittently for the next 4 minutes. Not only did Github prevent any customer data from being compromised but they have a blueprint in place to continue bolstering their network security. If Github hadn’t taken cybersecurity seriously this event could have been catastrophic, so the question is, does your organization?
