Pittsburgh, please join me in welcoming The Incline’s first reporter/curator, Sarah Anne Hughes.

Sarah Anne hails from the District of Columbia, where she served as managing editor of the alt-weekly Washington City Paper and editor-in-chief of DCist, a local site that covers news, food and culture. Before that, she blogged about national news and pop culture for The Washington Post.

She’s covered everything from pedestrian and transportation issues to politics and, most notably, the District’s family homelessness crisis. Sarah Anne is a graduate of American University and was raised in Alexandria, Va., and Lancaster, Pa.

Her love of local journalism, commitment to covering community issues and innovative ideas made her a natural first hire for The Incline.

“The choice to leave D.C. was incredibly difficult, but I’m thrilled to join The Incline,” Sarah Anne said. “As the tech sector continues to expand and urbanites in their 20s and 30s follow the lure of affordability, Pittsburgh needs local reporters now more than ever who are dedicated to examining how the city is changing — the good and the bad.

“I’m convinced The Incline will be able to do this with the skill of a traditional media outlet and the agility of a digital-only newsroom, as Billy Penn has already done in Philadelphia. I’m also looking forward to paying less than 50 percent of my monthly income in rent.”

Sarah Anne, who starts Sept. 1, plans to live in Lawrenceville with her boyfriend and dog. Follow her on Twitter, tell her what you want to see covered by emailing, and please send her recommendations for a dog allergist.
