you might have heard of brockhampton from their hit song Sugar, from their 5th album Ginger, but the story of brockhampton go way back and it involve a lot of social media and the internet.

first let’s talk about how the group is formed, most of music group formed from music contest such as American Idol, The Voice, etc. there are also music group formed because they’re a friends in real life and such. but this group, most of Brockhampton members are recruited from the forum KanyeToThe an online forum dedicated to kanye fan talk about anything. In fact there are many member that actually a total stranger to one another when they join. but the group name is not what it is today, its called AliveSinceForever, they release a self-titled EP and then after their leader Kevin released an album they rename the group to Brockhampton and then they release a mixtape called All-American Trash the group also previously talked with each other a lot on Facebook and then they moved to a house together.

now comes what i personally think is one of the best album trilogy of all time, the Saturation trilogy, the first of the critically acclaimed album released on 8 June 2017 alongside a whopping 4 music videos, and then the second album is released not even 2 months after the first one on 25 August 2017 after 3 music videos is released, and then the last but not least from the trilogy is released on 14 December 2017. the group also made a feature-length movie while making this trilogy and also they release a box set containing demos and documentation from the making of the trilogy.

what is surprising about all of this, they did all that without signing to a label. how is that possible ? one of the member, Romil and Jabari produce all of the beat, while HK help produce the concept art of all the album,.

how about the song releases ?

with the help of Spotify and Apple Music releasing music without a label is easier than before, they do not need to contact their label to release a CD to be shipped they just need to upload their song on the cloud.

how about the boxset and the merch ? if you ever bought something online and you come across a checkout screen that looks like this

there is a high chance the creator of the site is using Shopify, with Shopify you can set up a website that sell your creation without knowing a single thing about web development, even if you don’t want to contact a clothing company to make your merch, Shopify even has a clothes designer to make your own design and they will print it and sell it for you, knowing this they setup their store with Shopify, all of that from the album itself, the merch and the boxset are done by themselves with the help of the internet, at the time they didn’t even had a physical releases, everything is done digitally.

Fantano giving all three album at least an 8/10, and then the member being active on social media, even Reddit and the way they’re using social media platform not just to post link to their album but also interact with their fans, the style of the groups that similiar to Odd Future that just a couple years since it inactivity, makes the trilogy spread through the internet and hip hop community like wildfire.

now let’s jump to the current time, even now their uprising is still not over, their song Sugar got popular on TikTok and the group got even more popular, and as of right now when this article is written Sugar, their most popular song got 250+ millions on Spotify alone.

Brockhampton might be the first group that succeed from the internet, but they definitely not the last.
