Simple briefing about what is LBRY and what can it do
YouTube, a video sharing platform that we can use to watch video from other user or be the one who upload video. I believe most of people in this era familiar with YouTube and earn benefit from it whether as a job, research sources, or just for entertainment. YouTube as we use is own by YouTube itself so all of video that we upload is keep by them. But what if something happen to YouTube and it make your video being lost or maybe being hijacking by other. we know that security system of YouTube is strong but no one can guaranteed the system if completely SAFE. Main reason of risk of this security issue is centralized server model, base on this situation “LBRY” come as new product of content sharing network.
LBRY is a sharing platform that uses blockchain technology to enable users to publish material and get paid for doing so. People using LBRY Service can monetize their published material with its built-in payment system. The concept melds together the great technical advantages of both BitCoin and BitTorrent services for people looking to share content.
At the core of it, LBRY is a new protocol which is a peer to peer, decentralized file sharing and payment network secured by blockchain technology. Anyone can build apps on top of LBRY protocol that interact with digital content on the LBRY network. But these technical stuff is for developers.
As a user you can use LBRY platform for watching videos, listening to music and reading eBooks.
As a content creator, you can use LBRY to share your digital content like video, music, images, podcasts, eBooks etc.
Unlike YouTube, your activities are not tracked to serve you ads. In fact, LBRY is ad free. If you are logged into the network, you won’t see any ads anywhere on its website.
The LBRY is ‘governed’ by its own cryptocurrency called LBC (LBRY Credits).
Like any other cryptocurrency, you can mine it, buy it or get it from someone else. Content creators can set a price in LBC for streaming their content or they can provide it for free and get tipped in LBC by the viewers.
Don’t worry, you don’t necessarily need to buy LBC. Since its new, you’ll get LBC as rewards for doing simple tasks as viewing videos, exploring LBRY, following channels etc. In fact, you’ll get a few LBC simply for creating an account at LBRY and setting up your profile.
While the cryptocurrency is essential to create a fair and open marketplace in LBRY, its main feature is the peer to peer, decentralized network using blockchain. LBRY puts emphasis on treating you as user, not a product.

But if LBRY is flattening and not own by anyone, how about an illegal stuff that being upload on it. Yes that’s a disadvantage of decentralized system too. Because the service is not own by anyone so it cannot being administrative by anyone too, Completely “Freedom” with no other rule. But the interesting part of LBRY in here is LBRY is act as a network only. LBRY itself is the network that allow us to access file and we can host an platform from it.
From this we can host a website or build an application with it and filtering content with our protocol, like filtering gaming video only in your network and build a gamers only video website, or hosting an coders tutorial application that show only about coding content on it.
