“I wanna be an entrepreneur but I don’t have an idea…”

I’ve heard these words way too many times!

Ideas by themselves, no matter how creative, are meaningless and directionless thoughts waiting to be organized.

However, the right idea will always get you off on the right foot. I’m first going to list the 3 types of ideas and then demonstrate how to develop the perfect idea for you.

1. I’ve Heard That Idea Before…

The second you hear the word “idea”, you may assume it has to be new. That’s ludicrous! If you’re truly passionate about something that someone else is currently doing, that doesn’t negate your ability to start. Very few people come up with Uber and AirBnB.

As an entrepreneur, I’ve always chosen my passion over the best possible financial opportunity. Let’s be serious though, we can be more exciting than copy someone else right?

2. I Bet I Can Do It Better!

A step up from a completely unoriginal idea is the iteration of one. These founders say that their product solves a problem faster, cheaper, etc. If your passion happens to fall under this category, so be it. The great news is that there’s a better way to be different while still involving your passion.

3. What Is Missing From What I Enjoy?

The absolute BEST way to come up with a great idea that revolves around your passion is to look at your interest from a consumer perspective. What is that industry missing? As a consumer, what would you like to experience other than what’s currently being offered?

Here’s an example of how to do this properly:

Scenario:

You love practicing your tennis serve at the park. Unfortunately, no one wants to join you. You spend half the time serving and the other half pick up tennis balls.

Problem:

You’re wasting a lot of time!

Solution:

Develop a remote/device of some sort that connects with a special type of tennis ball so when you press a button, the balls all move towards the device automatically.

That idea just came off the top of my head as I’m writing. It’s so simple to create an innovative idea without loosing your passion in the process.

If you love tennis and don’t have an idea yet, you better hurry up and steal this one! Someone will do it sooner or later!

Let’s Recap

3 Types Of Ideas

  1. Unoriginal (but proven)
  2. Iterated
  3. Innovative
