I started to complain about my teaching schedule and then this happened…

I have been in the teaching profession for over 17 years now. I started the 2017–2018 school year with what I thought was a really intense schedule. All my classes I teach are in different rooms. I have to basically run from class to class with all my supplies to teach high school students. We are on an 8 period school day and it can be hectic! From 5th period until 8th period, I teach all the time from 11:37 until 3:04. It is a mad dash.

I began the year in a little shock. Why did my schedule end up so fast and crazy?! How did nobody see that this is a schedule that could not be conducive to teaching? I was angry at my administration. I was angry with my situation. Then it happened… after complaining a little loud in front of my students to a colleague, a student came up to me and said,

”Mr. H… we have that schedule every day for 8 periods for 180 days.”

I was completely taken back. This student was right. Why should we as teachers complain when we actually have it easier than students. We shouldn’t ask our students to do what we are not willing to do ourselves. This kid made a great point. If teaching 4 different subjects in a row in different rooms is not conducive toteaching… why would we think doing it 8 times a day would be conducive to learning?
