What if students could shop high schools to match their interests?
Students are shopping for college big time to find their best fit… why don’t high schools take this approach?
I was speaking with a students and she told me of her plan to shop colleges and universities. She told me of how she is looking for certain things like rank, dorm rules, job placement in her major, safety, and research projects the university is taking on. This I thought is an amazing plan to identify best fits for students entering college.
I think high schools need to identify with their students more than making their students identify with them.
This idea also got me thinking about students going to high school. Could this be an option? What if high schools would be like colleges and students could shop for schools that are more in tuned to their learning styles and interests? I think high schools need to identify with their students more than making their students identify with them. Knocking out some of the state standards and opening up more options for student choice in their education is the way to go. High schools could promote more paths to success for all their students instead of the traditional march to a 4 year college degree, trades, or military. High schools should add one more path… entrepreneurship. Forbes magazine calls the millennials “the true entrepreneur generation.” High schools can do a better job of pairing students to learn entrepreneurial skills rather than just shove everyone into the academia model. Let’s look at ways to individualize education by customizing education better for our clients/students.
