The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism Welcomes Two to Our Crew
We’re not really the press release type at the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. We like to think that we exist outside of the revolving-door culture of media, if not as a deliberate counterbalance to the cutthroat status quo. At the same time, we’d hate to miss an opportunity to shout this awesome news from the rooftops: Last week, we asked two longtime collaborators of the individuals behind BINJ to officially join our core entourage.
Coming on as Projects Coordinator, Emily Hopkins will track and oversee all BINJ editorial endeavors throughout various stages of production. Emily will coordinate with media makers, ranging from writers and investigators to photographers and designers, and will also work as a writer and editor on select assignments. A native of a small town in Central New York State, Emily studied journalism and English at Boston University, and as a student served as an editor of the Boston Occupier. In the time since, Emily’s weekly Free Radical column has run in the alternative weekly DigBoston. In addition to all that, Emily is a managing editor at Scout Magazines, a hyperlocal publishing house that produces bimonthly magazines for Cambridge and Somerville. Emily has also written or done research for outlets including the New York Times, BDCwire, MuckRock, Bitch Media, The Media, and Storybench, and is currently a graduate student in Northeastern’s Media Innovation program
A freelance writer and reporter who lived in Portland, Oregon prior to studying journalism at Northeastern University, Haley Hamilton will join BINJ as our first Staff Writer, and will juggle duties on anywhere from two to four upcoming features at a time. Her writing has appeared in DigBoston, as well as on Open Media Boston and on boston.com. Prior to joining BINJ, Haley worked as a research assistant at Harvard’s Project on Public Narrative, as a contributor to Homicide Watch Boston, and as a researcher on a joint investigation between Northeastern and the Boston Globe impugning unscrupulous debt collectors. A former skater with the Boston Derby Dames and strong, dark, coffee enthusiast, Haley can also be found behind the bar at PARK in Cambridge.
Both Emily and Haley declined to provide a hokey quote to pad this press release, insisting they are both already far too busy tackling assignments to bother with public relations. On the belief that actions speak louder than words, we told them we would handle the hokiness, and that we look forward to working alongside them in producing dynamite projects that bring more attention to BINJ, and which help us raise enough funding to hire even more talent to fulfill our mission.
