BINJ turns two this week but we won’t make it to three without your immediate help …
I apologize for sounding like a politician cooking stories about how their grade school teachers said they would never accomplish anything, but when we started the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism two years ago this week, people in the purportedly serious media world really did say our idea — to have a free-floating reporting incubator in Boston — was incomprehensible. Or too strange. Or impractical.
They have all been proven wrong. Thanks to supporters like you and our amazing army of media makers, we have raised enough money to produce more than 50 features and hundreds of columns that tackle everything from environmental, to housing, to homelessness, to transportation (bike safety, MBTA infrastructure), to government transparency issues which desperately need more attention. We’ve also hosted a bunch of events and engaged the community in groundbreaking ways. (Please join us for our next event, an art show and discussion about our crumbling trains, next Wednesday in Cambridge.)
I could go on and on, raving about everything from how BINJ Staff Writer Haley Hamilton and her investigation into liquor license reform were featured on WCVB Chronicle this week, to how despite being a relatively small shop, we are reaching hundreds of thousands of readers and viewers through multiple outlets and platforms, including with TV and radio shows that are catching on despite being completely unfunded.
You can find my longer spiel about our current initiatives and the devastating effect that President Trump has had on local journalism funding in a blog post I wrote titled, “10 Reasons BINJ Needs Your Support Right Away (and 5 ways you can help).” Or you can just go ahead and support us right now by clicking one of the two links below or by sending a check to our mailing address.
