23 August 2021 marks the launch of the very first version of DeFiChain Light Wallet. It’s been a year since then and the wallet has gone through numerous updates.

More recently, new design enhancements have been rolled out as part of the Light Wallet’s upgrade to version 2, which have been well received by the community. More details on DeFiChain Light Wallet (v2.0.0) will be shared after the full enhancements are completed, but with the new interface underway, let’s revisit the journey of the DeFiChain Light Wallet, starting from its initial days.

Old versus new

Initial days before the launch

Back then, full node wallets, specifically the DeFiChain full node desktop app, were most commonly used by the community. However, it was plagued with issues such as insufficient data storage as the blockchain grew, situations where users were unable to sync, crashes, loss of private keys as well as security issues. Furthermore, for new users, getting started with DeFiChain was challenging as a high level of technical knowledge was required.

To solve these issues and lower the entry barriers for new users, the team built DeFiChain Light Wallet which was meant to be highly secure but at the same time, was also easy for users to set up and navigate.

The first launch

The DeFiChain Light Wallet was first released in August 2021 (v0.8.0). The team’s main goal then was to enable features that were currently available to users on the desktop app.

Initial launch features:

  1. Create and restore Wallet
  2. List of balances
  3. Send and receive transactions
  4. Access to the DEX — Pool Swap
  5. Add and remove liquidity
  6. View recovery words

After the initial launch

Since then, the Light Wallet has seen 33 major releases which not only supported the DeFiChain upgrades (such as hard forks) but also improved the overall usability and experience for users.

Some notable features that have been launched on the Light Wallet:

  1. New products such as Loans and Auctions
  2. Support for multiple languages and addresses
  3. Dark mode
  4. Privacy lock
  5. Address book and labelling
  6. Currency selector
  7. In-app announcements
  8. Unified DFI

What’s next for Light Wallet

Since then, the following key metrics have been delivered (as of July 2022):

Downloads: More than 43,000+ downloads

Ratings:

  • iOS — 4.8/5 from 436+ ratings
  • Android — 4.791/5 from 460+ ratings

For iOS, the Light Wallet has seen a total of more than 1.6 million active sessions (*those who opt-in), with a 0.03% crash rate from those active sessions. Whereas for Android, 98.4% daily sessions took place without any crashes.

Having received resounding support from the community on the first version of the DeFiChain Light Wallet, the team will continue to provide constant support for new blockchain features and deliver UI/UX improvements while maintaining utmost security and stability for all.
