MONTGOMERY, Ala. — After 178.1 innings with the Biscuits, starting pitcher Genesis Cabrera was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Cabrera had been a member of the Butter and Blue since June 26, 2017, when he made his Double-A debut with seven scoreless innings.

“Thank you to the fans of the Tampa Bay Rays,” said Cabrera. “Thank you for everything. I love you so much.

“I love the fans here in Montgomery. Thank you for coming to every game.”

Cabrera, 21, had a combined 12–10 record, 3.94 ERA and 175 strikeouts with the Biscuits. The southpaw had pitched some of his best baseball in 2018, ranking second in the Southern League in strikeouts (124) and posting three scoreless starts of seven or more innings, including a career-high eight frames on June 24.

“My last start was really good,” said Cabrera, who offered 7.1 scoreless innings in his final appearance with Montgomery on July 26. “I love to throw my fastball.

“I’m very happy every day during the games, in the dugout and on the mound.”

Cabrera was sent in a package with Montgomery reliever Roel Ramirez and former Biscuit Justin Williams. Ramirez had a 3–1 record and a 2.53 ERA between High-A Charlotte and Montgomery this season.

In return, the Tampa Bay Rays received Tommy Pham. Pham had career-highs in batting average (.306), home runs (23) and RBIs (73) last season with the Cardinals. The 30-year old is slashing .248/.331/.399 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs in 2018.

Cabrera leaves “The Gump” as one of the largest personalities to have played for the Biscuits.
