Boak, can someone please pass me the sick bucket?
I’m all for freedom of speech. But when that “freedom of speech” is used to detract from women’s achievements, patronise their intelligence and restrain them to the home while proverbially high-fiving men, that’s more like hate speech.
Social media is blowing up; if you have logged in over the last 24 hours, you will likely be aware of a controversial speech delivered by Harrison Bukter, a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Harrison delivered the commencement speech at the Benedictine College graduation ceremony. The speech was a little over 20 minutes long, but I can summarise it in a few sentences.
“Women, your place is in the home. Men, high five bro, you ‘da man go out and do hard things. Joe Biden is delusional for being a Catholic and pro choice. Oh, and abortion, IVF, surrogacy and euthanasia are all bad. All contraception is evil, cohabiting before marriage is immoral and LGBTQIA+ is a sin.”
That’s it in a nutshell.
What a missed opportunity to inspire and encourage students to follow their hearts, live their dreams and stay true to themselves.
