I don’t like the way I look without makeup.

It’s embarrassing to admit this. How can I — someone who spends much of their career advocating for women — say that I don’t feel comfortable in public without altering my face?

It’s embarrassing. But it’s true.

So when Pamela Anderson showed up at the 2023 Paris Fashion Week without makeup, it made me confront many of my feelings on the subject. About why I don’t like how I look without makeup.

Friends, this wasn’t an easy conversation to have with myself.

This subject resurfaced this week when Pamela appeared on the Drew Barrymore show — as now is her MO — without makeup. Drew and her co-host Valerie Bertinelli also went makeup-free.

The reaction to this has been everywhere. Apparently, if you want to blow up the internet as a woman, it’s as easy as not wearing makeup.

That is a depressing thought indeed. Because when we talk about women not wearing makeup — for better or for worse — it’s a stark reminder that women are still not allowed to exist in their bodies just as they are. We can’t just not wear makeup, we have to have a
